Our History

Charman Uniting Church in the suburb of Cheltenham, Victoria was born in July 2023 from the amalgamation of St Andrew’s by the Sea, Black Rock Uniting Church and Cheltenham Mentone Uniting Church, into a new congregation. Stepping back further however, the earlier history has more facets – see the following article from the UCA VicTas website –

The 2023 amalgamation was a bit like a marriage. The two parties (the two congregations) had met several years prior, because Cheltenham Mentone needed somewhere to worship while their own premises were altered. They spent some time together, got to know each other, and decided they quite liked each other. Eventually they decided they might like to make the arrangement permanent, so Black Rock people had a vote and decided to propose to Cheltenham Mentone. But like every marriage, as we know them, it takes two to say “I do” before anything can progress. Cheltenham Mentone responded to the invitation and also had a vote and they agreed. So, the two Congregations became engaged and on Sunday 9 July 2023, promises were made and they were pronounced to be one Congregation, Charman Uniting Church.

Each of these early congregations have much longer histories, with stories of rich Christian service to the local and wider community.
